Fresh Berries for Intense Jam

New Brunswick Day 2021

A few of us kinsman rose early on this provincial holiday and made our way to Hillsborough for a visit to Harper’s U-pick. The raspberry season is almost finished, but black currants are in their prime. Once we had our baskets, I set off at a brisk pace past the raspberry canes toward the bottom of the field to find the currants. A raven passed nearby, flying low, as I neared the ditch, and I noticed the wooden supports for the berry plants appeared like a row of white crosses.

We hadn’t long to pick, but the canes were loaded with currants, and I did my best to make the most of it. In an hour’s time I had about three quarts. Later on today there will be a kinswoman using these to make some intense-tasting jam!

Black Currants and Raspberries. I built this cedar sideboard as a birthday gift for my mother. A black gel stain was applied to the top before being coated with varnish and paste-wax for a satin-smooth finish. The two bowls were turned by the late Tom Dewar.
